We all know that texting and driving is dangerous and even how dangerous it is to use a hand-held phone while you drive. With this knowledge also comes the question, “what can you do to prevent it?” Some people rely on their will power; others rely on putting the phone in their trunk, etc. However, some people need more practical solutions.
One such solution is text blocker and cell phone blocker devices. These gadgets effectively block your ability to use your phone while driving except to dial 911 and, in some cases, other emergency numbers. This is a more practical method of preventing the distraction of using your phone, as it still allows you to dial 911 when in an emergency situation. Situations like that can often hinge on a few seconds. If you have to run to your trunk to get your phone, those critical seconds could be wasted.
There are many text blocker and cell phone blocker devices out on the market right now. The iPhone store has a few apps and other companies offer similar software solutions which utilize your phone’s GPS to tell when you are traveling faster than an average person can run. It then shuts your phone out from doing anything other than calling 911. This is a very simple, typically inexpensive way to remove the temptation, however there are some cons. The GPS is typically a power hog and can swiftly drain your battery. Also, the software cannot tell who is driving and who is a passenger, so it can be impractical and very annoying for whoever is not the driver.
Another type of text blocker and cell phone blocker device uses your vehicles OBD II port (a port that allows a connection to your vehicles computer) to tell when the car is running. It then relays that information to your phone via Bluetooth signal. This lets your phone know to enter “safe driving mode” which effectively makes the driver seat a no phone zone. The only device I have found that uses this method is called Key2SafeDriving. This gadget is also profile driven, so if you are typically the passenger in a vehicle, you can still use your phone. This device is the best I have seen, thus far, as you can assign an admin to the device (such as a parent or manager) who can then fully customize the options for the phones and the device.
