subMedia Celebrates Ten and a Half Years of Culture Jamming
(PRWEB) March 10, 2005
Atlanta independent media group, subMedia (www.subMediatv.com) celebrates more than 10 years of promoting local visionaries of the sub-culture by cranking out its new ‘zine Molotov.
Since its humble beginnings in 1994 at the hands of Franklin Lopez (aka The Stimulator), subMedia has grown from a small group of determined filmmakers into a grassroots network of socially and politically engaged artists and individuals producing events with a sharp bite.
From war to sexuality subMedia scrutinizes popular culture offering an alternate view of the current state of affairs through film, performance art, video and music. Staying true to its cooperative roots and spirit of inclusiveness, the organization frequently partners with other independent collectives and artists whose voices remain unheard in mainstream media.
Founder Franklin Lopez hopes to continue promoting independent art and social involvement through the production of a small run ‘zine, Molotov, set to make its debut February 26th at Atlanta’s Eyedrum Gallery as part of subMedia’s 10-year anniversary.
This attitude of art following action defines subMedia and their commitment to “Culture Jamming” – a term which describes interfering with traditional media’s monopoly on the population at large. Culture Jammers disseminate information in subversive, ironic and often hilarious ways to showcase the perversity of what we have come to believe as fact. Equal parts performance and protest Culture Jamming throws a big monkey wrench in the way we are taught to accept information. And this is exactly what Franklin Lopez had in mind in fall 2004 when he decided to produce his small run ‘zine, Molotov.
Like an urban “Foxfire” for culture jammers, Molotov is a DIY manual. But, don’t expect any recipes for apple butter in this publication, instead, think making your own ski mask for protests or running your car on grease. And, the ‘zine will also include a DVD in each issue showcasing the best in independent film with contributions from notables like POP Films, Eyekiss Films and Versus Media.
“We definitely have a specific audience we hope to reach,” Lopez explains. “we chose the ‘zine format because it has been most closely associated with small, grassroots independent groups and is still out there, doing its own thing despite all the “flash and trash” magazines produced today.”
A suitable moniker reflects his philosophy about the ‘zine. “Historically, the Molotov Cocktail has been a weapon of the disenfranchised. It’s cheap, easy to produce and deliver – the same principles we’ve used to produce this ‘zine.”
The addition of Molotov, sees subMedia’s influences spreading beyond video and visual art into print media.
Lopez continues, ÂI’m a filmmaker and a lot of what subMedia has accomplished in the past 10 years has been directly related to video, film and music. But, the organization is about filling a gap and becoming a presence across all media, so I think it is extremely important to have a print presence now. This ‘zine is absolutely going to accomplish that for us.Â
