Use a Cell Phone Jammer and Get Jammed Up

Use a Cell phone jammer and Get Jammed Up

You’re about to take your first bite of that delicious dinner at your favorite restaurant

when you are suddenly jarred by a cell phone loudly ringing at a neighboring table. You turn

and glare at the wretch.

Rather than turning off the cell phone, your impolite neighbor not only answers the call,

but then goes on to engage in a rather lengthy and meaningless conversation, all in a loud

voice. Other diners stare at the cell phone user, but the conversation continues. Now the

steam that’s rising isn’t from the vegetables; it’s from your bubbling anger.

Instead of enjoying your expensive evening repast, you now have a manic desire get up, walk

over to the evildoer, rip the cell phone away, and then every-so-gently toss it in the

bottom of the caller’s water glass. Drown, rude cell phone, drown!

But before committing that little act of violence, you calm yourself enough to gesture for

the maître d’hôtel to come to your table. You tell the maître d’ about a cell phone jammer

you saw advertised online that is guaranteed to put an end to cell phone madness in

restaurants and other public spaces. It’s like a light winked on over the head of the maître

d’ . . . finally a solution!

A week later, you come back for another fine dining experience and find a new sign in the

window. It exclaims in bright bold letters that the restaurant is now a ‘Cell Phone Free

Zone’ thanks to the cell phone jammer newly purchased and installed by the restaurant owner.

This week you enjoy your dinner without a single cell phone ringing, and with every attempt

to make an outgoing cell call stymied by the jammer. You are happy. You eat in peace. Your

desert is on the house with the compliments of the maître d’.

Yet anther week passes. You return to the restaurant only to find that the sign has been

taken down, and the cell phone jammer is gone. What gives, you ask?

The maître d’ tells you that the restaurant was visited by an inspector from the Federal

Communications Commission who seized the jammer. A few days later, an FCC Notice of

Violation arrived in the mail assessing the restaurant owner the princely sum of ,000 for

using the jammer.

It turns out that in the United States Cell Phone Jammers are illegal to manufacture,

import, sell or offer for sale, or even advertise for sale, all thanks to the Communications

Act of 1934, codified as Title 47 of the United States Code Section 302a(b). Merely using a

cell phone jammer is illegal under Title 47 of the United States Code Section 333.

Congress has given the FCC broad powers to seize radio equipment causing intentional

interference, such as cell phone jammers. It can also levy steep fines against persons using

such devices. You can even end up in jail for up to a year for using a cell phone jammer!

The FCC’s web page explaining the federal laws against using Cell Phone Jammers is at:

http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=operations_2&id=cellular

So the next time a cell phone rings disrupting your restaurant meal, you can always blame

Congress and the FCC for allowing it!
